The Love Letters - Dear Son by Janette N. Brin

Dear Son,

From since you were a child, I have made it a point to always tell you I love you, each time you headed off to school or before we ended a phone call, I ensured that you regularly heard these words. Taking nothing for granted, it has always been important to me for you to know that you are deeply loved. You see, becoming a mother awakened my heart to what love really is. Who knew that this 7lb 4.5 oz. bundle of joy would elevate my life so, giving me such newfound purpose. You inspire me to strive harder to be better in this world, to set great examples for you as my legacy.

You are 22 now and months away from completing college and I could not be more proud. A major milestone for you that gets me emotional just thinking about what it will be like watching you walk across that stage on graduation day. The nine months I carried you, to the day that I had you seems like just a moment ago. The stories of you growing up only get more heartfelt with every milestone which passes. Oh how sweet those times of reading stories and singing songs together. Not to mention those frequent trips to Barnes & Noble so you could find new books. I recall your absolute favorites, the annual Children’s Almanac and every book there was on the Naruto series.

Your first tooth, first birthday, first fresh haircut, first Christmas when Uncle Rikky got you your first Air Jordans. Who knew that would be the beginning of your obsession of getting every new pair of Jordans that came out. School concerts, little league, gosh I was so excited to be a “Soccer Mom”. Did you know it took everything within me not to run out on the field when you fell down? However, words could not explain the sense of pride seeing you get up and play harder for that goal.

I absolutely love the times during our car commutes, having such great conversations about the world around us. Like that time you related seeing a huge crane to being “Papa God’s” spear gun. Because in your young mind God must love deep sea fishing just like your dad. Or that time you picked out buildings along the drive that would be perfect for you to open your new business. Because in your young mind you knew you were destined to be an entrepreneur just like your mom.

You are forever my little baby boy beside his mama as I worked on the early beginning of Caribbean POSH. Believe me when I say that you have taught me so much with your youthful wisdom. You said to me once, “mom don’t wish for anything, just do your best”. Well my son, for you I always will. As long as I live that is my promise to you.

In honor of the love month, I just want to remind you that with God in your heart there will be nothing short of a bright future for you. You have grown up to be an amazing young man. So talented and passionate, loving and kind. For me each memory and every moment with you is my reminder of just how great God is. It is a blessing to be your mom, and I thank God every day for bestowing you upon me, my son. You are my pride and joy, everything to me, my heartbeat, my unconditional love. God bless you always.

I love you,

Mom

As the Founder and Owner of Caribbean POSH, Brin has managed to weave a distinct and inspiring path in the world of entrepreneurship. Her quest began in 2005 when she first launched Caribbean POSH Magazine. With nothing more than a passion for creative work, her culture, and of course fashion. She was a single mom just determined to build a different kind of future for her and her son. Determined to be a positive role model for him while also inspiring other women like herself. “I remember brainstorming for hours about a business that I could to start, I just knew it had to be something that could also help other people.” – said Brin

Brin has since developed the magazine into a lifestyle brand aimed at empowering Caribbean Women otherwise referred to as the POSHgirl Movement. The movement is inclusive of the annual POSHgirl POWER Brunch, the POSHgirl fragrance, and the POSHgirl TALK television series on the Caribbean POSH YouTube Channel.

The magazine has featured well-known names such as Shaggy, Wyclef Jean, Lady Saw, and Fay Ann Lyons. Gaining some accolades along the way with both the Association of Black Media Workers and the Caribbean Fashion Awards. The annual POSHgirl POWER Brunch has featured some of the most influential Caribbean Women in the world such as Yvette Noel-Schure of Schure Media Group [Beyoncé’s Publicist], Recording Artist - Alison Hinds, and Plus Size Supermodel - Trisha Campbell. The leading empowerment event for Caribbean women is also well known for providing opportunity for local and regional models and fashion designers.

Brin’s goal is simple -- to continue to empower Caribbean women and influence a new generation of women entrepreneurs through the POSHgirl Movement.
