The Love Letters - Afraid To Love (A Poem) by Lancelot Chancel

Afraid to love

Does it scare you?

My strength of feeling, hopefulness beaming and status anew,

Do I stay too close?

When I’m curled on your chest, at our dancefloor best, or on media posts,

Do I loudly boast?

Of why you’re so great, tidying-up our plates, because you tingle me most,

Should I call you love?

If we see your folks, if we’re both too broke, and storms rumble above,

Am I racing ahead?

With my abundant friends, my story-book end, getting a king-sized bed,

May I hold your hand?

As we stroll ‘round your way, fearing your mind will stray, as my ship finds land,

Do you, fear my heart?

That it swallows you whole, and stifles your soul; ending you where I start,

Am I afraid too?

That I’m holding too tight, to the one thing that’s right; that I can’t bear to lose,

Yes, I’m afraid that I love you.
